That setup only really exists as a justification for introducing a range of monsters that you get to fight using era-appropriate weapons – it could have just easily been zombies or aliens. It’s a silly game, and it knows it, often revelling in its love for man-on-monster violence. Set in an alternate version of America’s wild west frontier lands, the story follows a secretive vampire-hunting order that has been dealing with an evolving threat for generations, while the government covers up their discoveries as viral outbreaks. Evil West is an old-school action game that blends melee combat with firearms a hybrid you don’t often see in the modern era. I thought about that interview as I played Evil West, the new game from the shooter masters at Polish studio, Flying Wild Hog. Their impassionate pleadings question the need for violence, but they’re met with a ridiculing, frustrated: “Because it’s so much fun, Jan. ![]() maybe they'll patch something in to remedy a few of people's concerns and it'll be worth paying for then.Įdit: what Hobbes said below me is very much on the point of things. There’s an early 2000s interview with director Quentin Tarantino in which a conservative pundit berates him about the level of gruesome violence in his movies. I recommend you maybe check back in a few months- it still feels way more like an early access/beta phase game than a fully fleshed out one. The game is great so far and yet i do feel it flawed and lacking in more ways than one - the savepoint (or lack thereof) system and also lack of communication to the player about how seemingly trivial things will impact the difficulty being a kind of major one. On topic: for a full release of a game in this genre i would still give this game a positive review simply because i love the aesthetic/concept and also because i love turnbased tactics combat games, but so far i would still tag that positive recommendation with a warning sticker. Tangent: if you have limited funds, then obviously you want the smoothest experience you can get when buying a game to play (also: i've watched my boyfriend play a lot of Just Cause 2, so I know that franchise is fun as hell- he's a pickier gamer than i am too) I seriously can't blame ya even though as i said, for me the pros of this game outweigh the cons. Tl dr - if I'd done things in the other order (story checkpoint after next mission) I'd still have gotten screwed since the game did this without any warning or recourse and there's no savepoint to reload to. >Game still expects me to do the next mission (and I do it anyway, but lost a character whom I'd been TOLD was a permanent party member and also lost all the money/equipment I'd spent on that character. >Dad 'decides to leave home forever' along with ALL THE STUFF I JUST BOUGHT FOR HIM and gets removed from the party >About to go do the mission (which is fully unlocked, I just have to click to start at the checkpoint) then remember I missed an (optional at that point) story checkpoint >Unlock some more missions, but figure I'll do some light story checkpoints on the map and deck Dad out in blingy guns and $wag which cost me a buncha gold >Get told that Dad is an 'essential character' aka permanent party member and that he mustn't die Possible spoiler for first campaign in the example below: not just because i dislike them in general, but because this game is a prime example of why they are outdated as a game mechanic. I just took a break from playing after a good 2 hours and i am really enjoying this game a LOT, but the savepoint system is definitely a huge negative for me. I hate games with autosave systems and this one is no exception. ![]()
